Dana Adamson, BSN, RN
Director of Pediatric Services |

As
Director of Pediatrics, Dana's areas of responsibility
include the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric
Intensive Care Unit, Pediatric Transplant, Pediatric
Hematology/Oncology and General Pediatrics. With over
30 years of nursing experience, 16 of them at Georgetown
University Hospital, Dana brings both knowledge and
experience caring for this diverse population. She
received her BSN and PNP from the University of Virginia.
In the spring of 1999, Dana received the Georgetown
University Medical Center's Award for Excellence in
Leadership. Her thoughts on Georgetown: "I love working
at Georgetown because of the warm and friendly culture
that exists. The nurses with whom I have had the pleasure
of working are professionals committed to providing
quality patient care." When not at work, Dana has traveled
on numerous medical mission trips throughout the world,
including Vietnam, India, Mexico and the Ukraine.

Mary Herold, BSN, RN & Doris Tavares, RN, CCRN

Creativity
and teamwork at its best! Mary and Doris have taken
an innovative approach to management. With support
from Hospital Administration, they have created a unique
management structure for the Medical Intensive Care
Unit. Staff has access to one or both of the management
team Monday thru Friday 12 hours a day. The nursing
staff believes that this management arrangement leads
to better communication, teamwork and accessibility
to a fresh manager!
Mary
Herold, co-manager for the Medical Intensive Care Unit,
has been an RN for 23 years - all of which have been
at Georgetown University Hospital, a Magnet hospital!
Fourteen of those years have been in a Nurse Manager
position. Mary is a graduate of George Mason University.
She is a member of AACN and the Greater Washington
Association of Critical Care Nurses. Mary's tenure
at Georgetown brings both the clinical expertise and
leadership needed in this dynamic ICU setting. She
feels the nurses at Georgetown exhibit high standards
and a strong commitment to quality patient care and
professional ethics. When not at work, Mary is chasing
a preschooler son and a toddler daughter. She is also
busy planning a fall wedding for her older son!
Doris
Tavares is the co-manager for the Medical Intensive
Care Unit. She has been an RN for 35 years and has
been at Georgetown for 19 years. She has worked as
a staff nurse and Clinical Administrator since coming
to Georgetown and has been the co-manager of the MICU
for the past 5 years. She is a member of AACN, GWAC
and is a CCRN. Doris is a graduate of St. Anne's Hospital
School of Nursing. Due to her husband's military career,
she has worked in various hospital settings across
the United States. Doris brings to Georgetown many
years of managerial experience and expertise in the
Critical Care arena. Doris remembers her first day
at Georgetown – the familial atmosphere, the
warmth, the caring, the compassion, all traits that
make Georgetown what it is today, a Magnet hospital.
When time allows, Doris can be found in New York or
Massachusetts with her daughters and families, including
her two grandchildren. |
Sue Howell, MS, RN
Director of Transplant & Surgical Specialties |

Susan
is the Nurse Manager of the Surgical Specialty Unit
and the Transplant Unit. She has been a nurse for 28
years, all of which have been here at Georgetown University
Hospital. She is a graduate of Georgetown University
and received her MS from Georgetown as well. Susan
is a member of the National Association of Orthopaedic
Nurses and is clinically certified in orthopaedic nursing.
When not at work, she enjoys cycling and spending time
with her dogs.

Laurie Dohnalek, MBA, RN, CNA

Laurie
is the Nurse Coordinator of the BMT/Hematology, Dialysis,
Apheresis, and Oncology/Gynecology units. She began
at Georgetown University Hospital 20 years ago as a
staff nurse in Perinatal and then went on to Oncology
Nursing. Laurie has been in a management role for 17
years. She attended SUNY in Cortland and got her MBA
from Marymount University in Virginia. Ms. Dohnalek
is a member of the Oncology Nursing Society and has
achieved ANA certification in Nursing Administration.
She has a post master's certificate in nursing
administration and has training in bio-ethics and chemotherapy.
She has written on nursing research and has been published
in Oncology Nursing Forum and Nursing management. Her
thoughts on Nursing at Georgetown: "The nursing
staff at GUH are all professionals with unlimited capabilities.
Georgetown provides challenge and numerous possibilities
for those interested in growth and achievement. The
staff RNs are impressive in their critical thinking
abilities, nursing skills and patient advocacy." Outside
of work, Laurie loves vacationing with her husband
and two children – and their adopted greyhound.

Judi Baily, BSN, RN

Judi
Bailey is the Nurse Coordinator for one of Georgetown
University Hospital's Medical Nursing units. She is
a graduate of the Mountainside Hospital School of Nursing
and Marymount University. Judi has worked in critical
care for several years. As a RN for over 25 years working
with a diverse medical patient population, Judi brings
to her job both knowledge and leadership. She has been
at Georgetown for 22 years and in a management position
for eighteen of those years. Judi enjoys the dynamic
work environment at Georgetown. She feels that this
type of work setting fosters growth and team work.
In her spare time she is an avid gardener and spends
time at a cabin in the mountains with her husband and
2 sons.

Pat Akhavain, MS, RN
Director of Medicine & Psychiatric Services

Pat
Akhavain is the Nurse Coordinator for the Inpatient Psychiatric
unit and a Medical Unit at Georgetown University Hospital.
Pat has been an RN for over 30 years and has clinical
expertise in psych, pediatric, and medical nursing. She
had attended the Philadelphia General Hospital School
of Nursing, University of MD, and Georgetown University
where she received her Master's in Nursing Administration.
Pat has been in a manager role for 10 years and is a
member of Sigma Theta Tau. Thoughts on nursing at Georgetown: "It
is a facility that provides excellent opportunities for
growth and learning, encourages one to use critical thinking
skills, provides the environment to discuss bioethical
issues." When not at work, Pat spends time raising Persian
cats and roses, cooking and baking. She loves to travel
and speaks Farsi. |
Linda Ali, MS, RNC

Linda
Ali is the Director of Perinatal Services at Georgetown
University Hospital. She has over 25 years of experience
in Perinatal nursing working in both university and community
hospitals. Linda received a diploma in nursing from the
University of Pennsylvania, a Bachelor of Science degree
in Nursing from Columbia Union College, and a Master
of Science degree in Women’s Health Advanced Practice
Nursing from the University of Maryland in Baltimore
with clinical focus as a Perinatal Clinical Nurse Specialist.
Linda has practiced as a staff nurse, assistant nurse
manager, nurse manager, nursing supervisor, director,
clinical faculty instructor and clinical nurse specialist.
She holds certification in Inpatient Obstetrics from
the National Certification Corporation, is a certified
child passenger safety technician (CPS), and is a member
of Sigma Theta Tau, the National Association of Clinical
Nurse Specialists (NACNS), the Association of Nurse Advocates
for Childbirth Solutions (ANACS), Perinatal Information
Systems User Group (PISUG), the Society for Medical Simulation
(SMS) and the Association of Women’s Health, Obstetrical
and Neonatal Nurses (AWHONN). Linda is an instructor
trainer for AWHONN’s Fetal Heart Monitoring Principles
and Practices Program, is a member of the consulting
panel, a section and a chapter leader, and most recently
developed the Perinatal Education and Orientation Program
(POEP). |
Gary Yehl, MSN, RN

The Surgical Intensive Care Unit is an exiting and dynamic environment that embraces endless challenges resolved by a diverse and focused group of nurses. Gary Yehl is the nurse manager for this unique environment. He has 17 years of critical care experience and has held various positions here at Georgetown Hospital. Gary received his bachelor's degree from Niagara University, a small catholic school in Niagara Falls, New York. He came to Georgetown to work and received his master's degree in Nursing Administration. Gary also received a certificate from Georgetown University for Acute Care Nurse Practitioner. He resides in Washington, DC and can often be seen rollerblading or biking through the city, most likely on his way to work. |
Patsy O’Meara, MS, RN

Patsy O’Meara is the Coordinator of the General Surgery and ENT unit, staffed by a dynamic and diverse group of nurses who love what they do. Born at Georgetown University Hospital, Patsy received her ADN from Montgomery College, and BSN and MS from Georgetown University. She has been a nurse at GUH since 1992 and is certified in med-surg nursing and a member of AMSN. Besides life at Georgetown, Patsy enjoys almost anything music or arts-related, especially if it involves her family.

Kerstin T. Magee, MSM, RN, CPAN

As Director of Pre & Postoperative Services, Kerstin maintains administrative responsibility for Presurgical Testing, Surgery Center, Pediatric Surgery Center, Preoperative Holding, Postanesthesia Care Unit (PACU), and Endoscopy PACU. Kerstin began her career at Georgetown University Hospital and quickly found perioperative nursing to be her passion! Now after 14 years in this specialized field, she brings experience, knowledge, and dedication to this role. Kerstin received a BSN from Georgetown University and a MSM from the University of Maryland University College. Additionally, Kerstin is a member of the American Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses, Chesapeake Bay Society of PeriAnesthesia Nurses, and is certified as a perianesthesia nurse.

Frances Baldwin-Davison, RN

Ms. Davison has over 10 years of progressively responsible Perioperative Management experience. Her leadership experience includes community and academic hospital settings.
Throughout her years in Perioperative management she has held leadership roles in building new Operating Rooms, implementing OR information systems, building and opening a free-standing Ambulatory Surgery Center, renovating existing Operating Rooms, recruitment and retention initiatives reducing agency usage from over 50% to 0, bringing an outsourced sterile processing department in-house including the hiring of 50 staff members, management, implementing instrument tracking, re-design of work flow, and purchasing 55,000 new surgical instruments. She is currently the Assistant Vice President for Perioperative Services at Georgetown University Hospital, the first Magnet hospital in the District of Columbia.
Ms. Davison’s believes that as leaders we need to focus on providing the best work environment possible for our staff so that they may focus on giving the highest quality patient care. |
